Cheques are being phased out
Effective September 1, 2026
Beginning September 1, 2026, the two-year transition away from Jamaican dollar cheque negotiation will take place in phases. As the first step, cheques valued at one million Jamaican dollars (J$1,000,000) or more will no longer be accepted for processing by financial institutions. This industry-wide change is being introduced in collaboration with the Jamaica Bankers Association to support a smooth transition to secure and convenient electronic payment options.
Why does this change matter to you?
For payments of one million Jamaican dollars (J$1,000,000.00) or more, we encourage you to use our Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) service. Available both online and in branch, RTGS offers a secure, reliable, and efficient way to transfer funds, with the added convenience of easier transaction tracking for your records.
