Scotiabank Supports Haiti Earthquake Relief

Kingston, Jamaica – September 16, 2021 - As part of the Caribbean community worldwide effort, Scotiabank has responded to the call for relief efforts by the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) to assist the nation of Haiti which was struck by a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake last month.

The Bank contributed $100,000 CAD to relief efforts being coordinated by the Canadian Bankers Association (CBA) which has so far yielded $410,000 CAD.

“As we did in 2010, we are again assisting with the recovery efforts in Haiti. Exacerbated by the pandemic, the island remains increasingly vulnerable to the threat of natural disasters and therefore support for their current recovery efforts is now critical. From a regional and humanitarian perspective, it is important that Haiti gets rebuilt with resiliency and we are happy to join with all the agencies that are aiding the process,” said Anya Schnoor, Executive Vice President, Caribbean, Central America & Uruguay for International Banking, Scotiabank.

During the 2010 disaster Scotiabank made a corporate commitment of $500,000, first $250,000 to the Canadian Red Cross' Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund and then another $250,000 in a donation matching program that supported the Bank's employees in Haiti.

The injuries and lives lost combined with over 125,000 buildings damaged or destroyed, marks the most recent earthquake as the worst disaster on record to strike the country since 2010.
